Soba – Salone Satellite 2009

soba_01.jpg

The most important new piece I presented at the Salone Satellite is Soba a stacking chair with armrests. The frame is constructed from steel rod which has been powder-coated. The seat and backrest are made from taut PVC strings which create a three-dimensional seat-shell. Soba can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

The fine structure and very open net contribute to an air of transparency and lightness while offering the comfort of an upholstered chair. Everyone who tried the chair at fair agreed that it is comfortable indeed – and this I am very happy about since I could verify my theory only once the chair was ready – just a few days before the fair started.

Twist – Salone Satellite 2009

twist_01.jpg

Twist is probably the most minimal object I have ever designed. In fact only very few people notice the twist in the table leg which connects the square and the circle in a smooth joint. Those who did notice however enjoyed the detail.

Twist is a coffee table made from powder coated square section tubes and a glass table top.

The fifth element in my Salone Satellite was Shoo. I have designed this product a few years back but since it is looking for a manufacturer again I thought it was worth showing.

June also at X-mas

x-mas-june_02.jpg

This year Maxdesign has commissioned me to design a special X-mas pattern for June. This is what I came up with.

Circles on a line, christmas baubles on a string, snowflakes falling…

The pattern is specially designed to measure to fit June and has been digitally printed white on gold. The lines follow the profile of the lounge chair. The circles create movement and pace.

Merry Christmas!

Finally I also have the photographs of Jay, the coffeetable that comes with June. Jay is available in four different sizes. The 4 table top colours and 7 colour options for the leg structure allow for an infinite number of possible colour combinations.

June is a lounge chair which invites to informal and leisurely seating. The comfort of the upholstered structure is worked out into clean lines where the one-shot foam-shell proposes a seat, a backrest and a “elbow-rest” as an extension of the backrest.

Materials: upholstered one-shot foam-shell, covered in textile; structure in powdercoated steel bands.

“Sitting Bull” Cassina

jordan-wrapped.jpg

A cushion with backrest?
A blanket with structure?
A garnment for sitting?

“Sitting Bull” is a piece of furniture to relax in, comforting, soothing, intimate.

“Sitting Bull” celebrates the qualities of soft, sensous materials and explores new methods of upholstery.

“Sitting Bull” acknoledges new, more casual lifestyles.

“Sitting Bull” is a product I designed while still at the Glasow School of Art. Since Cassina is producing the only legal reproductions of the original Charles Rennie Macintosh chairs they offered the School an annual competition where the winning students received the opportunity to spend two months at the Cassina Research & Development Department in Meda, Italy. My “Sitting Bull” made me win this competition and thus brought me to Italy…
