Luxluxlux 2010

Friday, May 28th, 2010

This year at the Salone Satellite I have presented together with my friend and knitwear designer Cécile Feilchenfeldt a collection of lamps. All detailed information can be found on the dedicated website luxluxlux.com. And an interview with both of us has been published on domusweb.

Here a few beautiful photographs done by Ezio Manciucca.

Goodlux and Sweetlux are made of tubular knit which is dressed around a single metal ring. The sophisticated use of the different qualities of the yarns used (nylon and lycra) creates volume and light diffusion where needed. Both lamps become extremely flat for transport.

Softlux is a table lamp. The fabric takes already its final shape during the knitting process integrating from the start the double layer (nylon and lycra) and the channels through which the metal structure passes. Again no cutting or sewing.

Superlux and MInilux are made of 3 metal rings which are connected only through the knitted fabric. In fact because of the folds and the rigidity of the yarn used the fabric itself becomes structural. This means that the lamps can take the form of a ball when hung but become flat during shipping.

Superlux / Minilux glow as shown on the image above keep on glowing when switched off due to the special glow yarn knitted into the fabric.

Soba – Salone Satellite 2009

The most important new piece I presented at the Salone Satellite is Soba a stacking chair with armrests. The frame is constructed from steel rod which has been powder-coated. The seat and backrest are made from taut PVC strings which create a three-dimensional seat-shell. Soba can be used indoors as well as outdoors.

The fine structure and very open net contribute to an air of transparency and lightness while offering the comfort of an upholstered chair. Everyone who tried the chair at fair agreed that it is comfortable indeed – and this I am very happy about since I could verify my theory only once the chair was ready – just a few days before the fair started.

Fancy Fency is a flexible room-divider made from bamboo strips connected with ribbons of felt. It creates fluid and intimate spaces inside big open spaces or lofts.

Fancy Fency can be made to any length.

Twist – Salone Satellite 2009

twist_01.jpg

Twist is probably the most minimal object I have ever designed. In fact only very few people notice the twist in the table leg which connects the square and the circle in a smooth joint. Those who did notice however enjoyed the detail.

Twist is a coffee table made from powder coated square section tubes and a glass table top.

x-mas-june_02.jpg

This year Maxdesign has commissioned me to design a special X-mas pattern for June. This is what I came up with.

Circles on a line, christmas baubles on a string, snowflakes falling…

The pattern is specially designed to measure to fit June and has been digitally printed white on gold. The lines follow the profile of the lounge chair. The circles create movement and pace.

Merry Christmas!

The idea of Galleria Temporanea was born out of the desire to do something together with friends, to collaborate together with the wonderful craftsmen that are based in the area of Milan, and to communicate the fact that we are around in a playful way. I have chosen glass as a material to work with and learned a lot on the way. My set of stacking tumblers are made from borosilicate glass tubes which are heated and hand-blown.

Finally I also have the photographs of Jay, the coffeetable that comes with June. Jay is available in four different sizes. The 4 table top colours and 7 colour options for the leg structure allow for an infinite number of possible colour combinations.

salone-2008-front.jpg

Same client – same location – same size (7×10 m) but a lot more furniture to display.

salone-2008-01.jpg

I have elaborated the step idea from last year only that this time around the steps have the full width of the stand. Also they don’t run perpendicular to the stand but at a slight angle, with the effect of creating different sized product areas at each end of the step. In order to give the different product groups a defined area the steps change alternatively from black to white. To create extra display space without interfering with the main product groups I have added some protruding elements which contain display niches and neonlighting to light wash the walls.

I keep my fingers crossed that next year we’ll manage to finally get a bigger space!
